Thinkin’ on the State of our Country
I’m reading the chronological Bible this year and it’s fitting that during this toxic political climate that I’m in Ezekiel and Jeremiah. So many mornings I read my assigned chapters and I’m shocked at how Old Testament Israel mimics America. According to Jeremiah, the country was immersed in adultery and lust. The people couldn’t trust their family and friends, they blindly believed lies. They killed their children and weren’t ashamed of anything they did. The more I read the more I think I live there.
My beloved America has become a nation of sin. One translation of Jeremiah 8:6 says “I listen to their conversations and don’t hear a word of truth”. Doesn’t that sound like the nightly news? Ezekiel confirms what I think I knew, we live among rebels. They have eyes to see but refuse to do so. They have ears to hear but refuse to hear. They are rebellious people. They don’t even care that they are lying, deceiving and misleading our citizens.
God’s anger at Israel’s sin resulted in their captivity and destruction. I wonder what his punishment for America will entail. “Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh every morning. I say to myself, ‘the Lord is my inheritance; therefore I will HOPE in him! The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.” Lamentations 3:22-25 NLT
