VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!
In my brief prayer prompts earlier this month we addressed voting and elections. With only 5 days till election day, our prayer should intensify.
The Family Research council estimates that over two million Christians did not vote in the last election. A recent panel discussion among participants at the FRC 2024 pointed out that many Christians do not vote for three main reasons.
1. The choices are horrible. We don’t have to debate that, certainly neither choice is ideal. That said the decision becomes one of which candidate will MOST lead us to Biblical truths. Which candidate honors human life and God’s definitions of sexuality? Which candidate upholds the rights of Christians? Jesus isn’t on the ballot so perfect is not a choice.
2. My vote doesn’t matter. It often seems that way but history tells us something different. JFK won by only 120,000 votes out of 68.8 million and only 84 electoral votes. Bush won the electoral college by only 5 votes. Local elections in Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, Wyoming and Nevada were won by ONE vote. Every vote matters.
3. The votes are rigged. Elections and integrity are two words that seem to be at odds in our society today. Trust in this basic process is certainly eroded. We can only pray that the elections will be honest, fortunately, “only pray” is enough.
“Decisions are made by the people who show up” Bottom Line. Only Jesus can restore America’s systems of elections. As Christians our job is to pray for discernment and supernatural intervention. Pray that the hidden will be made known and this year’s elections will not be distorted.
At the same time, we must also be committed to pray for our leaders, whether we agree with them or not. Paul lived in a society with a government that was ungodly and oppressive. Still he admonished the church, while being persecuted, to to honor and pray for their government. From the city council member to the president, “no authority except that which God has established” is in power.
Let us pray that God-honoring candidates will win the elections in a few weeks. From the White House to the smallest church house, may God’s will be done and He be glorified.
